Analyze Meta Tags

Why Meta Tags Are Critical for SEO

Meta tags are HTML elements that provide metadata about a web page to search engines and browsers. While most meta tags are invisible to site visitors, they play a crucial role in how search engines understand, index, and display your pages in search results. They also control how your content appears when shared on social media platforms.

A comprehensive meta tag setup is one of the foundational elements of technical SEO. Even if your content is excellent, missing or misconfigured meta tags can prevent Google from properly understanding your page, reduce click-through rates from search results, and produce ugly social sharing previews that deter engagement.

The Most Important Meta Tags

title (required)

The page title tag is technically not a meta tag but the single most important on-page SEO element. Displayed as the blue clickable link in search results. Keep under 60 characters / 600px. Include your primary keyword near the beginning.

meta description

Does not directly affect rankings but heavily influences click-through rate. Google may override it with content from the page. Write 120–160 characters with a clear call to action and natural keyword inclusion.

canonical link

Tells search engines which URL is the "master" version when multiple URLs serve identical or very similar content. Critical for preventing duplicate content issues on large sites, e-commerce stores, and sites with URL parameters.

robots meta

Controls crawler access and indexing at the page level. "index, follow" is the default behavior. Use "noindex" for pages you do not want in search results (thank-you pages, admin pages, staging content). Use "nofollow" to prevent link equity from flowing through links on the page.

viewport

Essential for mobile responsiveness. The standard value is width=device-width, initial-scale=1. Missing this tag causes Google to flag your page as not mobile-friendly, which can negatively affect mobile rankings.

Understanding Score Categories

This tool evaluates your meta tags across three dimensions:

  • Essential Score: Checks for the fundamental tags every page needs — title, meta description, canonical link, robots, and viewport.
  • Social Score: Evaluates Open Graph and Twitter Card completeness for optimal social media sharing previews.
  • Technical Score: Assesses technical tags like charset, viewport, canonical, theme-color, and robots directives.
