Google Draws This Code Too — Here Is What You Get

Start with the door Google left open. Its help article on asking customers for reviews puts a QR code on the Get more reviews screen, and a link generated by Google for your exact profile beats one anybody assembles. Take it if you can get it.

Two constraints from that same page decide whether it is enough. The first is stated verbatim: reviews QR codes can only be generated on a computer browser, not on mobile devices. If you run the profile from your phone, the code is not there at all. The second is the download instruction, which reads: Right-click the QR code. Select Save image as...

That gives you a screen-resolution raster. There is no vector, no width in millimetres, no choice of error correction level, and no way to know how large a module will end up once your designer drops the file into a layout. For a link in an email that is fine. For four hundred table tents it is not, and enlarging a small PNG is exactly how a QR code arrives at the printer with soft edges.

Which Error Correction Level to Choose

Every QR code carries redundant data so that a damaged symbol still decodes. There are four levels, and Denso Wave — the company that invented QR Code and still publishes its reference material — gives the approximate restoration rate for each.

Denso Wave states the guidance in one sentence: Level Q or H may be selected for factory environment where QR Code get dirty, whereas Level L may be selected for clean environment with the large amount of data. Typically, Level M (15%) is most frequently selected.

This tool defaults to Q rather than to M, and the reason is the surface. A review QR code lives on a table tent, a receipt footer, a counter card or a window decal. Every one of those is Denso Wave’s dirty case: handled with wet hands, creased in a pocket, bleached by six months of sun, printed over a fold. The clean-environment argument for L or M applies to a code on a screen or inside a document.

Moving up a level is not free, and Denso Wave says so: Raising this level improves error correction capability but also increases the amount of data QR Code size. Here is the actual cost for the two review link shapes, measured with this page’s own encoder.

One or two versions wider, on a symbol that is small to begin with. That is a cheap insurance premium against a code that stops scanning in March.

A Shorter Link Makes a More Forgiving Code

The table above hides the single most useful thing on this page, so here it is on its own. The two Google review link formats are very different lengths, and a QR code carries exactly as much data as you hand it.

At level Q, the short g.page form encodes into a 33-module symbol and the long writereview form into a 45-module one. Print both at 40 mm wide and the modules come out at 0.98 mm versus 0.75 mm — the short link gives you modules 29% larger on exactly the same piece of card.

Bigger modules are more forgiving of everything that goes wrong in the real world: a cheap printer, a camera at an angle, a scratched laminate, a dim room, a phone held too far back. So if Google has already handed you a g.page/r/ link from the dashboard, use that one rather than assembling a Place ID link — not because it is more official, but because it is forty characters shorter. The tool prints the module count for whichever link you gave it, so you can see the difference rather than take our word for it.

The Quiet Zone Is Not a Style Choice

Denso Wave’s reference on QR Code structure is unambiguous: QR Code requires a four-module wide margin at all sides of a symbol. And it defines what that means: The margin is a clear area around a symbol where nothing is printed.

So this tool always emits four modules of margin on all four sides, and does not offer a control to reduce it. Cropping the margin is the most common way a QR code that works in Illustrator stops working on the printed piece — the decoder needs that clear ring to find the symbol boundary at all, and a designer who trims it to make the code sit flush against a coloured block has quietly broken it. The quiet zone is inside the width you specify, so a 40 mm code is 40 mm of finished artwork, not 40 mm plus a margin you have to remember.

How Small You Can Print It

This is arithmetic, not opinion, so the tool computes it for your symbol instead of quoting a general figure. Denso Wave gives the module size formula on the same structure page:

25.4 mm/inch ÷ 400 dpi × 4 dots/module = 0.254 mm/module

Read it backwards and it tells you what you need. The module pitch is the finished width divided by the module count plus the eight modules of quiet zone. The floor on that pitch comes from Denso Wave’s FAQ, which puts the theoretical limit at The smallest printed QR Code would be made up of 0.03 mm modules. and then adds the number that actually applies to an office: With a common laser printer, the minimum printable module size is about 0.17 mm.

  • Module pitch — finished width divided by module count plus 8. At 40 mm, a 33-module symbol gives 0.98 mm modules.
  • Printable floor — module count plus 8, times 0.17 mm. That same 33-module symbol bottoms out around 7 mm wide.
  • One dot per module — 25.4 divided by the module pitch. It is the resolution at which a printer can place a module edge exactly, and a floor rather than a recommendation.

The tool shows all three for the symbol it just drew and warns you when the width you typed puts modules under 0.17 mm. Being above the floor is not permission to print at the floor — it means the printer can resolve the modules, nothing more.

Scan Distance: The Rule Everyone States as Fact

You will find the same sentence on every QR code page in this category: make the code at least one tenth as wide as the distance it will be scanned from. A metre away, a 100 mm code. Three metres, 300 mm.

It is a rule of thumb, and it is not in the specification. The 10:1 ratio does not appear in ISO/IEC 18004, and Denso Wave — which publishes the module size formula, the quiet zone requirement and the error correction table quoted above — publishes nothing at all about scan distance. Trace the citations and they lead to QR vendor blogs quoting one another. That does not make it useless: it is a sensible starting point, it errs generous, and it will not lead you far wrong for a first print. It is simply not a standard, and every page that presents it as one is passing along something it did not check.

Which is why the tool reports the module pitch and the printable floor, both of which fall out of Denso Wave’s own arithmetic, and does not print a scan distance beside them as though it had been computed. The honest procedure has not changed in twenty years: print one, walk to where the customer will stand, and scan it with the phone in your pocket.

Putting a Logo in the Middle

A logo in the centre of a QR code works by covering modules and letting error correction reconstruct them. It is not a feature of the format; it is a deliberate use of the damage budget. So the tool offers it, off by default, with the arithmetic on the table.

  • Switching the logo on forces level H and locks it. H restores about 30% of the codewords, and nothing below it has redundancy to spend on decoration.
  • The overlay is capped at 20% of the symbol width. A centred square at that width covers 20% times 20%, or 4%, of the symbol area, leaving roughly 26 points of the 30 for the scuffs and glare the level is actually there for.
  • The file never leaves your tab. It is read with FileReader and written into the SVG as a data URI, so the artwork you hand a printer is one self-contained file with no remote reference in it.

We are not going to publish a safe-coverage percentage, because there is not one to publish. Whether a given logo survives depends on which codewords it lands on, not on how much area it covers — two logos of identical size on the same symbol can behave differently. The 20% cap and level H are a defensible envelope, not a guarantee.

No generator can promise you a logo scans. The only proof is scanning the printed piece with the phones your customers actually carry, in the light where the piece will live.

What This Tool Cannot Tell You

The result panel says encoded, never verified, and the distinction is the whole point.

  • A QR code of a wrong URL is a perfectly valid QR code. This page encodes the string you handed it, and nothing more. It does not decode the result back, and it cannot confirm that the string opens your business. A well-formed Place ID for the shop next door produces a flawless code that sends your customers to review the shop next door.
  • It does not know your printer. It knows the module count and the width you typed, and therefore the module pitch. Substrate, ink spread, laminate, lighting and camera quality are all outside anything measurable from here.
  • It does not know the phones. Decoder behaviour varies by handset and operating system version, particularly at the margins where a logo or a small print size puts you.

Every claim in the result panel stays on the encoder’s side of that line: the module count it chose, the level it used, the pitch that follows from your width, and the floor Denso Wave publishes. Before a print run, scan the proof with a phone and read the business name in the dialog.

Before You Send It to the Printer

  1. Scan the proof, not the screen. A code that reads on a monitor tells you the encoder worked, which was never in doubt.
  2. Read the business name in the dialog. This is the actual test. Everything else is a proxy for it.
  3. Try it signed out. That is the state most customers are in, and the sign-in wall is where a review campaign quietly loses people.
  4. Send the SVG, not the PNG. The vector carries the width in millimetres, so it lands at the size you asked for rather than at whatever the layout software infers.
  5. Keep the quiet zone clear. Four modules of nothing on every side, and resist the request to tuck the code against a coloured block.
  6. Re-check it once a year. Google recommends refreshing Place IDs older than twelve months, and a code cured into ten thousand receipts cannot be re-pointed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Google generate a review QR code for me?

Yes, and you should look there first. Open your Business Profile, select Read Reviews, then Get more reviews, and the QR code is on that screen. Two limits are worth knowing before you plan a print run. Google states plainly that “Currently, reviews QR codes can only be generated on a computer browser, not on mobile devices.” And the only way it offers to save the image is to right-click it and choose Save image as, which gives you a screen-resolution raster: no vector, no size in millimetres, no control over the error correction level. That is the gap this page fills. It does not replace Google’s link — it takes Google’s link and draws it properly.

Which error correction level should I choose?

Q, which is the default here. Denso Wave, the company that invented QR Code, describes the trade-off like this: “Level Q or H may be selected for factory environment where QR Code get dirty, whereas Level L may be selected for clean environment with the large amount of data. Typically, Level M (15%) is most frequently selected.” A table tent, a receipt footer and a window decal are all the dirty case, not the clean one — they get handled, smeared, creased and rained on. M is the sensible default for a code on a screen. The cost of moving up is real but small here, because a review URL is short: at level Q a g.page review link needs 33 modules where M needs 29. One version wider, on a symbol that is already tiny.

How small can I print a Google review QR code?

Work it out from the module size, not from a rule of thumb. Denso Wave gives the formula as 25.4 mm/inch divided by the printer resolution, times the dots per module, and states that “With a common laser printer, the minimum printable module size is about 0.17 mm.” Multiply 0.17 mm by the module count plus the eight modules of quiet zone and you have the narrowest width your office printer can render honestly. For a 33-module symbol that is 41 modules across in total, so roughly 7 mm — and printing at 7 mm would be an act of faith. The tool computes that floor for your actual symbol and warns you when the width you asked for drops below it.

How far away can someone scan it?

Nobody authoritative has published an answer, and it is worth saying so. The rule you will see everywhere is 10:1 — that the code should be at least one tenth as wide as the distance it will be scanned from, so a 100 mm code for a metre away. That figure does not appear in ISO/IEC 18004 and Denso Wave does not publish it; it traces back to QR vendor blogs quoting each other. It is a reasonable starting point for a first print, and treating it as a specification is how people end up surprised. The only real test is scanning the printed piece, at the distance and in the light where it will live, with the phones your customers actually carry.

Can I put my logo in the middle of the QR code?

Is my business URL sent anywhere?

No. The encoder runs in your browser, and so does everything else on this page — the link parsing, the SVG construction and the PNG rendering. If you upload a logo it is read with FileReader and embedded as a data URI directly into the SVG, so the file stays self-contained for a printer and the image never leaves the tab. This is deliberate rather than incidental: a QR code generator that calls a remote image API sends your business URL, and often your logo, to a third party for a job that takes microseconds locally.
