The YouTube engagement rate formula
Likes, comments, shares and playlist saves are the interactions YouTube Analytics groups together, and views is what you divide them by. Unique viewers and subscribers are the two alternative denominators YouTube offers, and they answer different questions rather than better or worse versions of the same one, so the calculator shows all three at once instead of picking for you.
- Engagement rate by views = engagements ÷ views × 100
- Engagement rate by unique viewers = engagements ÷ unique viewers × 100
- Engagement rate by subscribers = engagements ÷ subscribers × 100
- Average engagement rate per video = (engagements ÷ number of videos) ÷ subscribers × 100
That last line is where calculators go wrong. Subscribers is a stock: your channel does not gain subscribers because you uploaded four videos this month, so dividing engagements by the upload count before dividing by subscribers produces a genuine per-video average. Views and unique viewers are flows — the totals YouTube Analytics hands you have already accumulated across those four uploads, so dividing numerator and denominator by four simply cancels. This tool applies the video count to the subscriber-based rate and to nothing else.
Dislikes are gone, and that is why this calculator has no dislikes field
There are two dates here and they are worth keeping apart. On 10 November 2021 YouTube announced on its own blog that it was “making the dislike counts private across YouTube, but the dislike button is not going away”, and added that “Creators will still be able to find their exact dislike counts in YouTube Studio”. Then on 15 December 2021 the Data API v3 revision history recorded the API side of it: “the video resource’s statistics.dislikeCount property is now private.” The button stayed, the number went behind the wall.
So two engagement rates now exist on YouTube where one used to. Yours can include dislikes, because the YouTube Analytics API still reports them to the channel owner. Everybody else’s cannot, because the public statistics object no longer carries the field. Any pre-2022 tutorial teaching likes plus dislikes plus comments divided by views is, without saying so, teaching an owner-only formula — and no benchmark published since can be built on it, which is why none of the ones on this page are. Rather than ship a field most visitors cannot fill in and no benchmark can be compared against, this calculator omits dislikes entirely and says so in the results.
What a stranger can see, and what only you can see
The public Data API videos.list statistics object is a short list: viewCount, likeCount, commentCount, a dislikeCount that has been private since December 2021, and a favoriteCount that has been hard-wired to zero for years. Shares and playlist saves are not in it. They exist as shares and videosAddedToPlaylists in the YouTube Analytics API, which only authenticates against channels you own. Unique viewers is Analytics-only too.
That boundary is why this page computes a separate public-only rate: likes plus comments, over views. It is not a footnote here the way it would be on another platform, because the tools competing for this search are mostly influencer-vetting tools, run by people evaluating channels they have no access to. Whatever formula those tools print, the number they can actually compute is the narrower one. If your own dashboard shows a healthy rate built substantially on shares and playlist saves, an agency screening you will not see that rate at all — so it is worth knowing both figures before a conversation about either.
Views changed meaning for Shorts on 31 March 2025
TeamYouTube announced the change on 26 March 2025 in a community post: “beginning on 3/31/2025, Shorts views will count the number of times your Short starts to play or replay with no minimum watch time requirement”. The metric that used to be called views — the one with a watch-time threshold — did not disappear; it was renamed engaged views, and YouTube Partner Program eligibility and Shorts revenue share still run on it. For long-form video, engaged views is the same number as views, which is why the field on this page appears for Shorts only.
The consequence for a rate is mechanical. The same Short, with the same engagement, is now divided by a larger number than it would have been on 30 March 2025, so its engagement rate is lower by construction. A Shorts rate from before that date and one from after are not comparable, and a year-on-year chart that crosses it shows a decline that is entirely an artefact of the definition. That is also why this calculator refuses to print a benchmark multiple for a Short: both published figures measured long-form video, so holding a Shorts rate against either would penalise the video for a rule change rather than for its performance.
YouTube impressions are thumbnail impressions. Do not divide by them.
This is the trap specific to YouTube, and it is the exact opposite of the trap on Instagram and Facebook. There, impressions is a retired word: Meta stopped reporting the metric in November 2025, so a rate quoted against it describes a measurement nobody can take any more. On YouTube, impressions is a live word that means something else entirely. Google’s help page is titled Check your YouTube thumbnail impressions and watch time, and an impression is counted only when “the thumbnail is shown for more than 1 second and at least 50% of the thumbnail is visible”.
It is also a partial count by design. The same page lists surfaces that are excluded from it: “External websites and apps”, “YouTube mobile website”, “YouTube Kids app”, “YouTube Music app”, “Content within the video player, such as cards and end screens”, “Email or notifications” and “TrueView discovery ads”. Every one of those is a place where somebody genuinely saw your video. So dividing engagements by thumbnail impressions divides by a number smaller than true exposure, by an amount that depends on your traffic mix and that you cannot recover — a channel that gets half its views from notifications and a channel that gets none will be flattered differently by the same arithmetic. This calculator therefore offers no thumbnail-impressions denominator at all. Reach is a related confusion worth naming. YouTube Studio has a Reach tab, but there is no reach metric inside it — the tab reports thumbnail impressions, click-through rate, views, unique viewers and traffic sources. If you want a per-person denominator on YouTube, the word is unique viewers.
Your subscriber count is published rounded
Google states it plainly: “Your audience can view a shortened version of your subscriber count.” A channel with 1,234 subscribers displays 1.23K, one with 1,234,567 displays 1.23M, and above 100 million the public number only moves for every 1,000,000 new subscribers. The exact figure lives in YouTube Studio and nowhere else.
The calculator still offers subscribers as a denominator, because it is the one number anybody can read off a channel page and therefore the one every outside comparison is built on. But be clear about what it means: a subscriber-based rate computed from the outside carries that rounding, and on a large channel the rounding is bigger than the differences people draw conclusions from. If you own the channel, take the exact count from Studio. If you do not, treat the third decimal place as noise.
YouTube optimises watch time, not engagement rate
This is the thesis of the page, and it separates YouTube from every other platform in this family. Google’s search and discovery documentation says “Our discovery system uses absolute and relative watch time as signals”, and mentions likes and dislikes only as some of the hundreds of signals it weighs. Engagement is in there. It is not the thing being optimised.
So treat your engagement rate as a reading about your audience rather than a lever on the algorithm. A video whose rate doubles is telling you something real about how the people who watched it felt, and that is genuinely useful for deciding what to make next. It is not a dial you can turn to get distribution, and chasing it with comment-bait can cost you the thing that actually is being measured — how long people stay. The honest version of the advice is unglamorous: make videos people finish, then read the engagement rate to find out which of them people also cared about.
What is a good engagement rate on YouTube?
Metricool puts long-form engagement at 1.30% for 2026, from a study whose dataset it describes as “we analyzed 799,718 videos from 71,177 accounts”. Its long-form table is worth reading in full, because the three rows together say something the headline number alone does not:

Read those rows as arithmetic and the story inverts. Interactions per video fell about 4%. Views per video rose about 76%. The rate is the first divided by the second, so it halved — and 77.93 ÷ 5,985.23 does reproduce 1.30%, just as 81.14 ÷ 3,404.84 reproduces 2.38%, which is how the denominator was confirmed rather than assumed. YouTube engagement rates did not collapse in 2026; the denominator grew. Note what this is not: the table covers long-form video only, where the 31 March 2025 Shorts rule does not apply, so the growth in views is a real distribution change and not a counting change. Between that and the Shorts redefinition, the platform has had two independent denominator shifts in eighteen months, which is the honest headline for anyone charting a rate across them.
Social Status puts the average at 0.28%, for July 2026. That figure is a rolling monthly one: the page prints “The average Engagement Rate on YouTube last month was:” above it and names no month beside the number, so the month here comes from the chart underneath, whose final bar reads Jul 2026 at 0.28%. Its formula, verbatim, is “Video ER = (Likes + Comments + Shares) divided by Video Views” and “Channel ER = Average of all Video ER’s during the given time interval (ie: last month)”.
Now put the two together, because this is the interesting part. They agree on the denominator — both divide by views — and their numerators differ only by playlist saves. They should be close. They are 4.6 times apart. The reason is neither the formula nor the sample: it is the estimator. Metricool publishes a ratio of averages, dividing total interactions by total views across the corpus. Social Status publishes an average of ratios, computing each video’s own rate and then averaging those. On a normal distribution those two are near enough the same number. On YouTube view counts, which are violently skewed, they are not: a ratio of averages is dominated by whichever videos got the most views, while an average of ratios gives a 200-view upload exactly as much weight as a 2,000,000-view one — and small videos reliably post higher rates. The Instagram pair on this site disagrees about saves, the TikTok pair about the numerator, the Facebook pair about the denominator. YouTube’s pair disagrees about how you average.
Two widely-cited sources are deliberately absent, and it seems worth saying why rather than quietly leaving gaps. Rival IQ, whose medians the Instagram, TikTok and Facebook pages here all cite, publishes nothing for YouTube: there is no good-engagement-rate-youtube article, and the word YouTube does not appear anywhere in its Social Media Industry Benchmark Report, which covers Facebook, Instagram, X and TikTok only. There is no Rival IQ YouTube median to quote. Socialinsider’s YouTube benchmarks URL answers with the content of its homepage and carries a canonical tag pointing at the root, so there is no page there to cite either.
HypeAuditor ranks first for this search, and its number is not quotable — it says only that most research suggests around 2%, with no dataset and no year. Its formula, though, is worth printing verbatim, because it is genuinely strange: “Engagement rate = ((Total number of likes + comments + shares + subscribers) / Total number of views) * 100”. That puts subscribers gained in the numerator, a fourth distinct numerator across the four platform calculators on this site, and it makes the top-ranked result’s rate structurally higher than everyone else’s — the same video scores better there for reasons that have nothing to do with engagement. Its own worked example then drops the subscriber term. If you are comparing a rate to a benchmark, check what went on top before you check what went underneath.
How to use this calculator
- Pick the format. Long-form video or Shorts. The difference is not the field set but what a view means: since 31 March 2025 a Shorts view has no minimum watch time, so Shorts gets an engaged-views field and no benchmark comparison.
- Enter the public engagements — likes and comments. These are the two anybody can read off the video, and they are the numerator of the public-only rate the results show alongside your own.
- Add the Studio-only engagements if you own the channel: shares and videos added to playlists. Both come from YouTube Analytics and neither appears in the public API. There is no dislikes field, because that count went private in 2021.
- Enter your view count. It is the denominator both published benchmarks use, so it is the only rate that can be compared to anything outside your own channel. Unique viewers and subscribers are optional extras that answer different questions.
- Enter the number of videos if you are measuring a set rather than one upload. It divides the subscriber-based rate only; views and unique viewers already total across them.

Add up the likes, comments, shares and playlist saves on a video, divide by the view count and multiply by 100. YouTube announced on 10 November 2021 that it was making dislike counts private across the platform while keeping the dislike button, and noted that creators would still find their exact dislike counts in YouTube Studio. The Data API followed on 15 December 2021, when the video resource statistics.dislikeCount property became private. Your own dislikes still exist and the YouTube Analytics API still reports them to you, so a dislikes-inclusive rate is computable for your own channel and for nobody else. Any tutorial teaching likes plus dislikes plus comments over views is therefore teaching an owner-only formula, whether or not it says so, and no published benchmark can be built on it any more.
Did the March 2025 Shorts change break my engagement rate?
It changed the denominator rather than breaking anything. From 31 March 2025 a Shorts view counts every time the Short starts to play or replay, with no minimum watch time requirement. The older, stricter count survives under a new name, engaged views, and it is still what YouTube Partner Program eligibility and Shorts revenue share run on. Because the new view count is larger for the same video, the same engagement divided by it produces a lower rate. A Shorts engagement rate measured before that date and one measured after are not the same measurement, and comparing them shows a decline that never happened. This calculator computes both for a Short when you supply engaged views, and deliberately refuses to hold a Shorts rate against either published benchmark, because both of them measured long-form video.
Should I divide by views or subscribers on YouTube?
Views, unless you are measuring an audience rather than a video. A channel earns most of its views from people who are not subscribed, so a subscriber-based rate answers a different question: what share of the people who opted in bothered to react. It is also the only rate an outsider can approximate, which is why influencer-vetting tools quote it, and it is approximate even then because YouTube publishes subscriber counts rounded. The view-based rate is what both published benchmarks use and what YouTube Studio leads with. If you are pooling several videos, note that the video count divides the subscriber-based rate only. Subscribers is a stock that does not grow because you uploaded more, while views have already totalled across those uploads.
