Validate Twitter Card Tags

What Are Twitter Cards?

Twitter Cards (now X Cards) are meta tags that control how your web pages appear when links are shared on X (formerly Twitter). When properly configured, they attach rich media previews — including images, titles, and descriptions — to tweets containing your URLs.

Without Twitter Card tags, shared links appear as plain text URLs with no visual preview. Pages with properly configured cards get significantly more clicks and engagement because the visual preview catches users' attention in their feed.

Twitter Card Types

X supports four card types, each designed for different content formats:

summary

The default card type. Displays a small square thumbnail image alongside a title, description, and domain. Best for articles, blog posts, and general web pages.

Image: min 144x144px, recommended 240x240px

summary_large_image

Features a large, prominent image above the title and description. Ideal for visual content, landing pages, and any page where the image is the primary draw.

Image: min 300x157px, recommended 1200x628px (2:1 ratio)

app

Designed for mobile app promotion. Displays app name, description, icon, rating, and a direct download button. Requires additional tags like twitter:app:id:iphone.

Requires app store IDs for iOS and/or Android

player

Enables inline video, audio, or other media playback directly in the tweet. Used by platforms like YouTube, Spotify, and SoundCloud.

Requires twitter:player URL, width, and height

Required and Recommended Tags

TagRequiredDescription
twitter:cardYesCard type: summary, summary_large_image, app, or player
twitter:titleYes*Card title (max 70 chars). Falls back to og:title
twitter:descriptionRecommendedCard description (max 200 chars). Falls back to og:description
twitter:imageYes*Image URL (max 5MB). Falls back to og:image
twitter:image:altRecommendedAlt text for the image (max 420 chars)
twitter:siteRecommendedX handle of the website (e.g., @yoursite)
twitter:creatorRecommendedX handle of the content author (e.g., @authorname)

* twitter:title and twitter:image fall back to og:title and og:image respectively, so they are not strictly required if the OG equivalents are present.

Image Size Requirements

  • summary_large_image: Minimum 300x157px, recommended 1200x628px (2:1 aspect ratio). Images are cropped to a 2:1 ratio.
  • summary: Minimum 144x144px, recommended 240x240px (1:1 aspect ratio). Images are cropped to a square.
  • Maximum file size: 5MB for all card types.
  • Supported formats: JPG, PNG, GIF, and WebP.
  • Always use absolute URLs for images — relative paths will not work.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter a URL — paste the full URL of the page you want to validate.
  2. Review the card preview — see an approximate mockup of how your link will render on X.
  3. Check the validation results — the checklist shows which tags are present, missing, or falling back to OpenGraph equivalents.
  4. Follow the recommendations — implement the suggested improvements to maximize your X card engagement.

OpenGraph Fallback Behavior

X uses OpenGraph tags as fallbacks when Twitter-specific tags are not present. This means you can often rely on your existing OG tags, but there is one important exception:

  • twitter:title falls back to og:title
  • twitter:description falls back to og:description
  • twitter:image falls back to og:image
  • twitter:card has no fallback — it must always be set explicitly for X to render any card preview at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Twitter Card?

Twitter Cards are meta tags that control how your web pages appear when shared on X (formerly Twitter). They allow you to attach rich media like images, titles, and descriptions to tweets containing links to your website, resulting in higher engagement and click-through rates.

What are the different Twitter Card types?

X supports four card types: "summary" (small square image with title and description), "summary_large_image" (large image above title and description), "app" (for mobile app promotion with download links), and "player" (for inline video or audio playback).

Does X use OpenGraph tags as fallback?

Yes, X will fall back to OpenGraph tags (og:title, og:description, og:image) when the corresponding Twitter-specific meta tags are not present. However, twitter:card has no OG equivalent and must always be set explicitly for X to render a card preview.

What image size should I use for Twitter Cards?

For summary_large_image cards, use images at least 300x157px (recommended 1200x628px with a 2:1 ratio). For summary cards, images should be at least 144x144px (recommended 240x240px square). Images must be under 5MB in JPG, PNG, GIF, or WebP format.

Why is my Twitter Card not showing on X?

Common reasons include: missing the required twitter:card meta tag, images that are too small or inaccessible, the page blocking crawlers via robots.txt, or X's cache serving a stale version. Ensure your meta tags are in the <head> section and that your images are publicly accessible.
